What Has Eight Arms and Juggles?

Otto the octopus, of course! Not only that, but this wily octopus can also smash his way out of the aquarium and wreak electrical havoc on the entire complex.

I first heard this on Wait Wait… Don’t Tell Me! this weekend. An Austrian Times article elaborates:

“Once we saw him juggling the hermit crabs in his tank, another time he threw stones against the glass damaging it. And from time to time he completely re-arranges his tank to make it suit his own taste better – much to the distress of his fellow tank inhabitants.”

When he feels like playing sharpshooter, Otto aims for the lights.

“We knew that he was bored as the aquarium is closed for winter, and at two feet, seven inches Otto had discovered he was big enough to swing onto the edge of his tank and shoot out a the 2000 Watt spot light above him with a carefully directed jet of water.”

Now that’s entertainment. With eight arms and the proclivity for activity, you’d think they could find a productive task for Otto.

Tell me. How would you put an intelligent octopus to work?

I would put him to work either transcribing the Dead Sea Scrolls, or have one type as I dicatate my current blogg.

Sal: Oh, that is a good idea. An octopus secretary who can take dictation for the blog. Hell, he could probably code some new plug-ins at the same time.

I was thinking on it, and I would probably see how mechanically inclined he was. Start with some Legos and see if he can build anything. Then move on to more complex objects. I’m sure there have been studies done, but what fun Otto could be. All he wants is a little attention anyhow.
